New Downtown Food to Experience

Looking for a new Madison restaurant to try?  Come downtown and experience Canteen, Madison’s newest taqueria and tequila bar (yum!).

Canteen is located in the former Nostrano space on Hamilton St. just off the capital square.  After failed attempts to sell the Italian bistro, Nostrano owners approached popular Madison restaurant group, Food Fight, to gauge their interest in purchasing the location.  Food Fight jumped at the chance to purchase the Madison restaurant with the intention of converting it into a taqueria.  And so was born, Canteen!

After light renovations of the Madison restaurant, Canteen opened to wild success in early May.  Featuring lunch and dinner daily, as well as a weekend brunch (including a Friday morning brunch), Canteen specializes in traditional tacos.  Canteen chefs haven chosen to work with small corn tortillas in order to highlight the delicious selection of meats being used in the tacos.  Traditional favorite meats such as al pastor, carnitas, and carne asada are prominent on the menu while more unique flavors are found in the barbacoa beef brisket and the green chile chicken.  Choose from 11 different taco selections and load those tacos up with one of Canteen’s several different salsas and sauces.

It wouldn’t be a Madison restaurant without booze, so now for the boozy stuff.  Canteen specializes in tequila and mezcal and features a cocktail menu which employs the nearly 40 types of tequila and 15 different mezcals they have in stock!  Try a tequila flight to sample 3 of their many options or have a specialty margarita if you are looking for a more flavorful drink.  Be sure to stop in during Happy Hour, every weekday from 2:00-5:00 or on Friday and Saturday from 11:00-2:00! For more information about Canteen’s menu or to find hours and specials, take a look at their website, I’d love for you to check out this new Madison restaurant and let me know what you think!
